How To Determine How Much Fill Dirt Is Needed For Your Project

Fill DirtBeing able to determine the amount of fill dirt you need for your construction project can save you money, and keep you from having a huge mound of leftover dirt. Luckily, all you need to do is take a few measurements and do a quick calculation to find out how much fill dirt you need.

1. Measure the length and width, in feet, of the space you want to fill.
Ex. 42′ by 50′

2. Determine the area, or total square footage, of the space. To do this, multiply the length times the width.
Ex. 42′ x 50′ = 2,100 square feet

3. Fill dirt is sold in cubic yards. To convert your square footage into cubic yards, first divide your square footage by 1000, and then multiply your result by 3. Your result tells you how many cubic yards will fill 1 inch of depth.
Ex. 2,100 / 1000 = 2.1 ; 2.1 x 3 = 6.3 cubic yards

4. Multiply your cubic yardage by the inches of depth you need to fill.
Ex. For a two-inch depth: 6.3 x 2 = 12.6 cubic yards

5. Add a little extra as a margin of error. An extra cubic yard is a good starting point, but if your fill area has an irregular shape, two extra cubic yards of fill dirt can’t hurt.
