Curb Appeal for Your Business – Is It Sending the Right Message?

New Office SpaceThe work that goes on inside of your office building or store may be spectacular, but if the exterior of your office building or store is unattractive, passer-bys are very likely to either not notice your building or to form a negative impression of it. In order to make a good impression and capture the attention of potential clients or customers, you may need a commercial lawn care service to maintain your landscape.

One of your best forms of advertisement is the sign in front of your business. This sign should feature an eye-catching design and color scheme. Plants and flowers can draw attention to the sign, but it’s essential that they don’t block the view of the sign. A spotlight shining on your sign at night will provide constant advertisement.

If you have a walkway leading to the front door of your office or store, check the condition it’s in. Not only are cracks in the walkway unattractive, they can be a tripping hazard for anyone using the walkway. Plants lining the walkway should not obstruct it. Keeping debris cleared off will also give people a positive impression of your business. A commercial lawn maintenance contract with a provider in your area can assure that the shrubs, trees and plants in your landscape are trimmed appropriately and are an attractive feature in the landscape design.

Commercial land clearing may involve clearing a space for your building and parking lot. When preparing for construction, it’s essential that you consider how to gain the most visibility. Once you achieve that, you want to be sure that the curb appeal for your business is appealing and inviting. Think of your curb appeal as an advertising feature for your business and use it to your advantage.

Sod, Sod, Sod – What Type is Best for Your Yard – 5 Tips

sodDepending upon the size of your yard, the lawn can be one of the biggest investments you make in your home. Here are 5 things to consider before making that investment.

Climate

In an area with cold winters and hot summers, bluegrass, ryegrass, bentgrass and fescues are all good choices. If you live in an area where temperatures are warm year ’round, your best choices are Bermuda, St. Augustine, Centipede or Carpetgrass.

Soil Type

What type of soil you are working with is an important consideration. If you are fortunate enough to have fertile, loamy soil, any type of grass will thrive. If you are dealing with sandy soil that doesn’t hold water as well, Bahia may be your best option. Centipede will grow in areas with acidic soil.

Sun Exposure

When choosing sod, it is vital that you know what type of sun exposure your lawn area has. If you are dealing with a northern exposure or an area of shade choose St. Augustine, Centipede, or a fescue-type sod. For areas of intense sunlight a better choice would be Bermuda or Zoysia.

Use

How will you use your lawn area? Most grasses will take some foot-traffic, but if your yard will be used as a children’s play area or for frequent entertaining, Bermuda or Zoysia are your best options.

Upkeep

How much time do you have to devote to yard maintenance? Centipede is a slow grower, so requires less time, while Bermuda has a fast growth rate and requires regular applications of fertilizer. For those with moderate amounts of time for lawn care chores, fescue is a good choice as it has a moderate growth rate.
Taking your time to choose the right sod will pay off in a beautiful lawn for years to come.

4 Helpful Tips on What to Do When Your Lawn is Suffering From Too Much Shade

fall outdoorIf the trees and plants in your lawn provide a little much shade during the day, chances are your grass will not grow. All grass types need at least three to four hours of sunlight each day to look healthy and lush. Here are four quick tips to help you grow grass in your shady yard:

1. Increase the amount of sunlight in your yard by pruning back trees and plants. Not only will your yard look neat and tidy, your grass will have a greater chance of getting the proper amount of sunlight. If possible, remove some trees and plants that contribute too much shade.

2. Remove grass cuttings during lawn maintenance to allow more sunlight to penetrate the soil. The same goes for leaves that fall during cool autumn months. Even though grass grows much slower during autumn and winter, it’s still growing. Maximize sun exposure as much as possible all year long to maintain a full lawn.

3. Limit watering when performing lawn care on your lawn. Since moisture buildup can occur in shady areas with limited sunlight, watering a shady lawn can cause mold growth, which can kill the grass. Instead, water on overly hot days or during times of minimal rainfall. Water deeply to reach the roots and then walk away. This will encourage grass to grow, but not mold

4. Choose a shade tolerant grass such as Red Creeping Fescue, St. Augustine, Rough Bluegrass, or Perennial Ryegrass. These grasses still require sunlight, but are far more tolerant to shady spots than other grass types.

Fertilizers with a high concentration of phosphorous help roots grow healthy and strong. When reseeding your lawn, look for a good seed mix such as Scotts Turf Builder Deep Shade Mix or Pennington Sun and Shade Mix.

21 Aug Posted by in Blog, Sod | Comments Off on Keep your lawn green during a drought

Keep your lawn green during a drought

Unhealthy grassMuch of the country has been experiencing drought conditions for several years now. This lack of water can make lawn maintenance difficult. For a lot of people, the American dream is a house with a green lawn and a white picket fence. With drought water restrictions being enacted, the green lawn part of that dream is quickly fading to brown. However, it is possible to practice good lawn care during these times. Here are 5 tips for keeping your lawn green and healthy when you can’t water every day.

1. If possible, consider planting native grasses. Grass that is acclimated to your location already will grow well without much help from you.

2. Aerate your lawn and amending the top soil with compost to improve soil quality and allow your grass to develop stronger roots.

3. Keep grass longer to encourage deeper roots and shade the surface of the soil during especially sunny days. Set your mower to 2 1/2 – 3 inches and leave the clippings on the lawn.

4. Water long and slow on the days you can. Make sure you’re not watering at too high of a volume – all the water should absorb into the soil rather than running off into the street. Water long enough so that after 24-36 hours the soil is moist to a depth of 6-8 inches, then don’t water again until the grass begins to show signs of needing water. Shallow, frequent watering does not help the grass grow deep, strong roots.

5. Water in the morning before the heat of the day. This allows most of the water to make it to the soil rather than evaporating in the sun. Use a sprinkler that keeps the water as low as possible.

If you see a tree limb that is hanging down over electrical lines, you should call your local tree cutting services. Even if you are not from the area, it is important that you inform someone.

When tree limbs go down after a wind or rainstorm, the limb can knock down live power lines. This is especially dangerous if a car is driving by at that time. The people in the vehicle could be electrocuted if they step out of their car with the downed live wire lying on a wet road. Downed power lines can also create a massive spark that could start a fire. To avoid problems, you should execute proper lawn maintenance and observe your tree limbs near power lines.

Taking proper precautions is important and it can save lives. With the continuous miles of electrical lines throughout the country, there are many possible areas that need tree maintenance at any given moment. Tree limbs that hang over power lines, no matter how high, need to be cut down. This job is not meant for the average person and should be left to the local tree cutting services.
